The Mimulus ‘Orange Glow’ is a genus from the Phrymaceae family and is commonly named monkey flower. The monkey flowers used to be an member of the Scrophulariaceae family, but after DNA investigation this was changed to the Phrymaceae family in the APG III (= Angiosperm Phylogeny Group) and AGP IV.
The genus contains only seven species, two are native to eastern North America and the other five are native to Asia, Australia, Africa or Madagascar.
Most monkey flowers grow in moist soil in woods or along watersides. There annual or perennial monkey flowers, but there are also a few subshrubs.
The Mimulus ‘Orange Glow’ is a perennial and prefers a sunny, warm spot with moist, fertile soil. It will tolerate some light shade.
The flowers rise above the leaves. The leaves are about 4 inches (10 cm) high. If you remove the spent flowers you can prolong the bloom. The energy then goes to the production of new flowers instead of the production of seeds.
The roots grow near the surface. To protect the roots against winter cold it is wise to apply a layer of mulch.
